Best features in Spirit City: Lofi Sessions

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is a gamified focus tool that combines soothing lofi music with a personalised virtual space. You can create your own bedroom where your avatar sits with cute Spirits, while staying productive IRL. Several of the best features in Spirit City offer unique ways that enhance your productivity while providing a relaxing and enjoyable experience.

I wanted to write this guide to show potential players why Spirit City is such an amazing game. After Update 1.4.0, which dropped on 26th August, it felt even more important to talk about this game. I’ve personally used Spirit City to fall asleep, to track tasks, and even used my avatar as a body double.

I have a lot of love for Spirit City, so here’s a list of the best features in Spirit City!

A Guide to the Best Features in Spirit City

A “gamified focus tool” like Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is unlike any traditional game you may have played. Instead of demanding your full attention, a gamified focus tool (or “productivity management” game) is designed to sit in the background while you work, providing a soothing ambiance and helping you stay on track with your tasks. It’s not about achieving objectives or defeating enemies; instead, it’s about enhancing your real-life productivity in a cosy, stress-free environment.

I’ve reviewed another game in this genre before — On Track — which also aims to help players manage their tasks in a calming setting. However, Spirit City: Lofi Sessions took the concept a lot further than On Track did by incorporating more interactive features. The key difference is that while you don’t actively “play” these games in the traditional sense, they offer a gentle, engaging presence that can boost your productivity. You might keep the game running on a second screen as you work, allowing its soothing music and peaceful visuals to create an ideal work environment.

Spirit Companions — So You’re Never Alone While You’re Working

An avatar with cat ears is playing on a handheld console while a blue and grey dog rests next to them.

One of the best features in Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is the ability to discover and collect Spirit Companions. These adorable little creatures are hidden throughout the game, and finding them requires a bit of detective work. To lure out a Spirit, you’ll need to pay attention to the hints provided in the SpiritDex. This might involve playing a specific soundscape, positioning your avatar in a particular spot, or setting the time of day just right.

The joy of having a Spirit Companion by your side while you work or study cannot be understated. Each Spirit gives you some companionship, making your productivity sessions feel less solitary. I cannot imagine having my avatar all alone in the giant bedroom. Having a Spirit by my side is a must, and I never start sorting out my tasks without setting up my avatar and today’s cute little friend first. Update 1.4, the most recent update that dropped on 26th August 2024, even introduced two new Spirits! We now have APE-bit and Flutterfrog to keep us company in the game.

APE-bit is a little monkey with handheld gaming features (this cutie has controller buttons on their ears!) and Flutterfrog is a frog with wings and plenty of colourful designs to choose from.

My favourite Spirit companions are Lenny the cat, Moonpaw the dog, and Waxolotl the axolotl!

Productivity Features — Tick Off Your To-Do List in Your Own Time

The to-do list, one of the best features in Spirit City: Lofi Sessions, open and showing some crossed off tasks as a fem-presenting avatar sits in a beanbag typing on a laptop. An axolotl sits at their feet.

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions has a robust set of productivity features, designed to help you stay organised and focused. The game offers a customisable to-do list where you can jot down tasks, whether they’re work-related, personal goals, or even daily habits you want to cultivate. You can create multiple lists, reorder them, and even set due dates to keep track of your deadlines. This makes it easier to manage various aspects of your life without feeling overwhelmed.

The built-in Pomodoro timer is another one of the best features in Spirit City. It breaks your work into manageable intervals, set to a default of 25 minutes of focused activity followed by a short break. This method helps maintain concentration and prevents burnout, especially during long sessions. The timer is fully adjustable, so you can change your working time and breaks to meet your preferences. The widgets for both the to-do list and Pomodoro timer are movable and resizable, allowing you to set up your screen exactly how you want.

Try Body Doubling – It May Not Be a “Feature”, But it Works

A fem-presenting avatar with cat ears is meditating underneath a window, wearing a tanuki hoodie. Next to them is a Trashnuki, a tanuki wearing a trashcan lid on its head.

Another creative way to use Spirit City is through body doubling with your avatar. Although this isn’t a built-in feature, it’s something that can be particularly helpful if you’re living alone or don’t have someone available to body double with. By setting up your avatar to perform the same task you’re about to tackle — whether it’s studying, writing, or knitting — you create a virtual companion that mirrors your actions.

Seeing your avatar engaged in the same activity can provide a sense of shared purpose, making your tasks feel less solitary and more achievable. This subtle psychological boost can be especially motivating, turning your work sessions into a more communal experience, even when you’re physically alone. Of course, there’s a limit to the tasks that your avatar can perform, though Update 1.4.0 did add some new ones! I’m especially fond of the new meditating activity — considering that you can set the music, sounds, and a timer, this game is PERFECT for meditation!

Customise Your Avatar — Be Your IRL Self or Create a Fantasy You

This isn’t even half of the socks.

Spirit City‘s character customisation allows you to craft an avatar that truly reflects your personality. The game offers a wide range of options, from hairstyles and outfits to unique accessories. You can choose from various clothing styles, including casual hoodies, cosy sweaters, and a range of leggings and shorts. There are also lots of socks. So. Many. Socks.

One of the best features in Spirit City is the variety of headwear options available. You can accessorise your character with antlers, cat ears, or other items to add some fantasy to your appearance. These accessories allow you to experiment with different styles.

The androgynous body design of the avatar ensures that players of any gender can enjoy these customisation features. This thoughtful inclusivity is great for players who might feel limited by the gendered customisation options in other games. As someone who is non-binary, I very much appreciate having an avatar like this. You can change the body shape of the avatar somewhat, add facial hair, and choose from a variety of haircuts.

Design Your Space — Hundreds of Decor Items to Create Your Perfect Cosy Bedroom

Your virtual bedroom in Spirit City is more than just a place for your avatar to hang out. It’s a sanctuary that you can design to your heart’s content. With hundreds of decor items available, you can create the cosy space of your dreams. From wallpapers and flooring to rugs and bookshelves, the options are vast and varied. You can even change the scenery outside your window, adding another layer of customisation to your environment.

The latest update introduced over 500 new items, allowing for even more creative freedom. Whether you’re going for a witchy aesthetic, a gothic vibe, or a bright and airy cottagecore room, the possibilities are endless. I created a starlit nature room filled with star-shaped fairy lights, natural woods, and a calming green and purple palette. But I’ve seen players design everything from seasonal-themed rooms to fantasy-inspired retreats.

The beauty of this feature is that it allows you to create a space that feels truly personal. It doesn’t matter if you’re using the game to unwind or to stay productive. Having a room that feels like “you” can make all the difference.

To give you an idea of how much the game has changed, here is my room from before the update. A significant difference to the other image at the top of this section, right?

Why I Love Spirit City: Lofi Sessions

Beyond these incredible features, what truly sets Spirit City apart is the dedication and responsiveness of Mooncube Games. Since its release in April 2024, the game has seen four major updates. Each brought new content and improvements based on player feedback. The developers are active in their Discord, happy to get suggestions from players, which has helped the game grow.

The latest update is a testament to this commitment. It’s clear that the team behind Spirit City cares deeply about creating the best possible experience for its players. Really, every feature is one of the best features in Spirit City… But this article would be huge if I went into everything that the game has available.

A Little About Supporting Mooncube Games — The Supporter’s Pack

As much as this guide happened because of Update 1.4.0, I’d also like to talk about Spirit City‘s DLC. Update 1.3.0 was released back in June alongside a Supporter’s Pack. Players can buy this for a very affordable price (£4.99 on Steam!) and further support the game. This pack added a new galaxy skin to every companion, and gave Lenny the cat an extra golden skin. These skins turned our Spirit companions into actual spirits, making them look much more cosmic.

Conclusion

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is more than just a game — it’s a tool for relaxation, productivity, and self-expression. Whether you’re there to tick off your to-do list, discover new Spirits, or simply enjoy the cosy ambiance, it’s a place where you can truly be yourself. And with the developers constantly adding new content and listening to their community, there’s always something new to look forward to.

Currently, Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is only available on Steam (for £9.99). But, there’s exciting news for those who prefer other platforms! The developers at Mooncube Games have expressed interest in expanding to additional platforms. This will make the game even more accessible to players who want to incorporate this focus tool into their day.

This is extremely well written – you have captivated me so much that I’ve just purchased the game on Steam. It will come in super handy when I start studying again and my concentration falters. Great piece!
